MCKINLEYVILLE, Humboldt County — October 24, 2026. A busy intersection near McKinleyville Middle School was the focus of a county road-safety project announced for early October. The Humboldt County Department of Public Works said crews planned to change pavement striping where Central Avenue meets Railroad Drive, giving traffic turning right onto Railroad Drive a dedicated turn lane.
What the county proposed to change
The public notice, issued September 24, described removing existing pavement markings and installing striping for a dedicated right-turn lane on Central Avenue. The stated purpose was to improve safety for travel associated with McKinleyville Middle School. A turning lane can make traffic movements more predictable, but it does not by itself prove that all pedestrian, bicyclist or drop-off risks have been resolved.
The schedule is historical, not an active closure advisory
Humboldt County advertised work beginning Monday, October 5, and ending Thursday, October 8, 2026. Those dates are already past. California58 has not independently inspected the intersection or obtained a completion certificate. It would be incorrect to write that closures are continuing on October 24 simply because a September county notice describes an earlier construction window.
The official notice also includes a minor weekday/date inconsistency in its detailed work-hours wording. For any future resurfacing or traffic pattern adjustment, residents should follow currently posted county information and physical road controls rather than rely on an old time estimate.
Why a small road change matters for families
Central Avenue serves local households, shops and school journeys. Even a short lane reconfiguration can influence morning queues, right turns, pedestrian visibility and how drivers approach crossings. The safest test of the changes is real use after the markings have settled into daily school traffic, not just a diagram of intended striping.
Residents with concerns about the right-turn lane, visibility near crossings, or missing markings can contact Humboldt County Public Works at 707-445-7421. A useful report identifies the direction of travel, whether an incident happened during school arrival or dismissal, and whether photographs show current rather than old conditions.
County roads and local government
McKinleyville is an unincorporated community, not a city with its own municipal council. That means many road, land-use and infrastructure decisions are overseen by Humboldt County, with community advisory bodies offering local input.
